Exploring Jim’s Farmers’ Market: A Chambersburg Staple

For over 40 years, Jim’s Farmers Market has been a cornerstone of the Chambersburg community, offering a blend of history, local charm, and quality goods. Located at 255 Grant Street in a former railroad roundhouse, the market is not just a place to shop but a living testament to resilience and community spirit. I stopped by this past weekend (not my first visit) to grab some goodies for a holiday party and take some pictures to share here.

The History of Jim’s Farmers’ Market

In 1983, a devastating fire destroyed its original building, but in an extraordinary feat, owners, vendors, and volunteers rallied to relocate and reopen in the vacant roundhouse where it stands today—all within just four days. This rapid recovery highlights the strong community bonds that continue to define the market.

You would think the market’s name would come from the owner being named Jim, but we couldn’t be more wrong! The market’s name, J.I.M., reflects its founders: Jake Floud, Ike Esh, and Marty Reese.

As of December 2024, things appear to be thriving here at the market! There was an abundance of people lined up for many of the vendors even on a frigid day in PA.

A Variety of Vendors from Meats to Sweets!

Jim’s Farmers Market offers something for everyone. Whether you’re in search of fresh deli meats from M&M Meats or Esh’s Meat and Cheeses, homemade pies from Ada’s Bakery, or a delicious lunch at Farmboy Hoagies, the market delivers. Other popular vendors include Mama’s Soft Pretzels and Mims Donuts & Coffee which always have a line (as you can see from the picture below from Saturday)

Aside from just the sweets and produce, there are numerous handmade stalls selling soaps, gifts, and other goodies. There is also an entire separate section of the market that is more of a flea market with antiques to sort through when not eating a donut or a ham sandwich.

One of my favorite stops at the market is Country Heritage Kitchen where you can get delicious ham sliced right in front of you for on a sandwich or with breakfast. Then for dessert you have options outside of the many baked goods to choose from; whether handmade chocolates are your choice from Chocolate Street or you prefer some hand dipped ice cream, you won’t go hungry!
