Guide to Greencastle’s Old Home Week

I have been attending Old Home Week festivities for the past 30 years, and the week in Greencastle is one of the most special small town events I have ever witnessed. From parades, to dog shows, to fireworks, to home run derbies, the week is packed full of events for everyone, regardless of age or interest.

This is what living in a small town is all about, and I want to give you a glimpse of this tradition to help you fall in love as much as I do.

The History of Old Home Week

The tradition dates back to 1902, when Philip Edward Baer published a letter calling for a reunion of Greencastle’s “Old Boys.” The response was substantial: around 65 men returned, gathering for a chicken dinner at Town Hall, a picnic at Sandy Hollow along Conococheague Creek, speeches, and lively band concerts.

That successful event evolved into a triennial gathering in 1905, at which point the festivities expanded to welcome the “Old Boys,” their families, and residents from Antrim Township. Remarkably, this tradition has continued ever since with the 2025 Old Home Week hosting over 5,000 people from across the country coming home to friends and family.

2025 Old Home Week Events

Old Home Week kicks off with an opening ceremony and an opportunity to get your badge last minute for a $6.00 donation. The first day of activities (Friday) included a pancake breakfast, 5k race, the opening of the ice cream trail, and a decorated Martin’s Mill Bridge to drive-thru.

Saturday, August 2

The weekend (and the official start of OHW) brought even more excitement. Visitors cooled off at the 80s-themed pool party at Moss Springs, enjoyed free ice cream and live music on the Square, checked out the Motorcycle Show, and ended the night with a lively Concert in the Park.

Sunday blended reflection and celebration with community church services, an organ recital, and a classic community picnic. History lovers toured local landmarks before the evening capped off with a Band Concert on the Square.

Monday, August 4

The week continued with the always-popular Dog Show, a Children’s Party and Story Hour, and the Flower Show. Those who love history could also tour Greencastle’s historic homes, while the evening brought more entertainment downtown.

Tuesday, August 5

Sports and tradition took the stage with the Old Timers Baseball Game, library programs, and events around town. The Square once again served as the gathering spot for live music and camaraderie.

Wednesday, August 6

Wednesday was filled with walking tours, open houses, and reunions, giving everyone a chance to connect with Greencastle’s history. The evening’s concert in the Square was another highlight, drawing crowds downtown.

Thursday, August 7

The celebration carried on with more open houses, activities, and community displays throughout the day, ending with another night of live music downtown.

A sweet highlight of the week came with the 1st Ed Credit Union Celebration, where visitors enjoyed Dietrich’s Ice Cream along with games and giveaways. Music and good conversation filled the Square throughout the evening with a fireworks show capping off the night.

Saturday, August 9

Old Home Week closed in style with parades, concerts, and community events, bringing this beloved tradition to a memorable close. Now it’s time to start counting down the days until summer of 2028!
